WNY High School Sailing Program

Purpose:
To build a strong local high school sailing program which promotes seamanship and sportsmanship while encouraging inter-scholastic competition at local and regional levels by combining the talents of student sailors from local high schools.
Eligibility:
The program is open to full time students, girls and boys, at the local high schools in grades 9 through 12, plus selected 8th graders. Team sizes can be as small as one sailor. Competitors race in the teams of two and single sailors will be paired with athletes from other schools.
If you would like to compete beyond the local regattas (Buffalo and Rochester) and qualify for the MASSA national regattas each school must complete a one time registration, before the regatta, with the Inter-Scholastic Sailing Association at www.highschoolsailingusa.org. Go to the Registration tab on the left side of the home page; follow the instructions for school registration. The cost is $90 per school.
There is a list at http://www.toad.net/~mariners/massa/massa.htm of the MASSA regattas. The program can provide boats when needed but it will be the sailors’ and their parents’ responsibility to get them to and from the regattas.
Fall 2010 Session: September 8 to November 14, 2010
Practices: Wednesdays, 4 PM– 7 PM
Races : Sundays, 9 AM – 5 PM
All practices and races will be held at the Buffalo Yacht Club, 1 Porter Avenue

Cost:
The cost for the season is $200.00 per student sailor for Sunday & Wednesday practices or $140 for Sundays only. This includes a Junior Membership to the Buffalo Yacht Club.
Transportation:
Each student sailor is responsible for their own transportation to and from practices and events. We will be handing out a roster to encourage car pooling.
Boats:
Sailors will be using J22’s and 420’s supplied by the Buffalo Yacht Club and the Buffalo Canoe Club. Sailors must have their own sailing gear and USCG approved life jackets.
